Why does my Maca contain a warning label?

We at World Gourmet believe that it is important to be informed. The warning label you see on your bag of Maca is a requirement for a number of foods and commodities in the state of California under Proposition 65.  In case you aren’t familiar with Proposition 65 below is a quick summary:

The full name of Prop 65 is California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. This proposition was originally written to limit substances in drinking water. Over time the list has been updated and currently has over eight hundred substances. A number of these substances, such as the ones found in Maca, are present in our environment in small amounts and can be absorbed from the soil into the plants grown for food.  Proper washing and processing of the plants does not fully remove these substances, and as a result many foods contain very small unavoidable amounts of substances (parts per million or billion depending on the food) that were incorporated into the food matrix during the growing process.

While the goal of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is to limit the exposure to substances to the greatest extent possible, the FDA takes into account that even with using good practices the absorbed substances from our environment cannot be completely removed from food. Water, due to its make-up, is able to be more thoroughly filtered and therefore a greater amount of substances can be removed.  Since Prop 65 was originally written for water – the limits it enforces do not always take into account the inability of some of these environmental substances to be completely removed.  As such, there are many foods that meet the safety standards for FDA, however are unable to be below the levels listed in Prop 65 and therefore product labels need to carry the warning for consumers to be informed. You will likely start seeing the Prop 65 warning on more products as the state of California has made it a requirement as of August 30, 2018 for other commodities to be labeled with this warning.

We source the highest quality organic foods from around the world and implement tools, testing and systems to ensure safety. Our Organic Maca Powder contains only dried maca root.  The warning label is due to the heavy metal content inherent to the environment and the final product (Organic Maca Powder) is within the standards set by FDA.
